As part of Liverpool's role in hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 on behalf of Ukraine, I was commissioned to design the official Host City Key—a ceremonial symbol passed between cities during the traditional Insignia Handover Ceremony.
Unveiled at St George’s Hall in front of a global audience, the key served as a bold creative statement, celebrating Liverpool’s identity, musical heritage, and its twinning with Odesa, Ukraine.
Design & Symbolism
The key was designed to reflect Liverpool’s deep-rooted cultural spirit while also paying tribute to the Ukrainian people. Key features include:
Liver Birds – representing the soul of Liverpool
Yellow Submarine – a nod to The Beatles and the city’s rich musical legacy
Vinyl Record – referencing Liverpool’s UNESCO City of Music status
Anchor Shape – symbolising Liverpool’s maritime links and its bond with the port city of Odesa
"United by Music" – the 2023 Eurovision theme, included to reflect solidarity and cultural connection
Ukrainian and UK colours – subtly woven into the palette to honour the unique partnership
Craft & Collaboration
The concept was developed by me and brought to life by a team of skilled local artisans:
3D modelling & printing by Tor Designs
Finishing & paintwork by Quirky Design Co
Custom brass keyring by Noctua Jewellery
The finished key took over 40 hours of design and fabrication, combining digital craftsmanship with hand-finished detailing.
Legacy
The key was handed over as part of the Eurovision Semi-Final Allocation Draw and is now part of the permanent Eurovision Insignia Chain, proudly on display at the Museum of Liverpool.
Why It Matters
This key isn’t just a ceremonial object—it’s a cultural artefact. As its designer, I wanted to create something joyful and meaningful, fusing visual storytelling with symbolism to reflect a historic Eurovision moment rooted in unity, creativity, and hope.
